On 1/17/23, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately on Hyer Road. The vehicle and driver returned to a residence of off Hartley Circle where Troopers contacted them shortly later. Investigation revealed Donielle Lewis, age 30 of Palmer, had driven after drinking and was impaired by alcohol. Donielle had a child in the car with her when this occurred. Donielle was arrested for DUI and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor 1st and was remanded to Matsu Pretrial.

On 1/17/23 at approximately 1825 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle collision on Fireweed Road at Gershmel Loop. Investigation revealed a 2020 White Hyundia Tuscon driven by a 16 year old female pulled out from Gershmel Loop in front of a 2002 GMC Truck driven by Joseph Kirk, 18 yrs old of Palmer. The truck collided with the Hyundia. The 16 year old was transported to MatSu Regional ER for treatment and later cited for Failure to Yield after Stopping at Stop sign.

Carpenter was wanted for failure to appear for pre-trial conference hearing on 12/19/2022 on the original charge of disorderly conduct. Carpenter was remanded to Mat Su Pretrial on $50.00 cash only bail.

The victim had been flown into Fairbanks with minor injuries by Lifemed. Investigation led to the arrest of Maggie Ambrose of Hughes for Domestic Violence Assault in the Fourth Degree. Maggie has been remanded to the Fairbanks Correctional Center without further incident.

Final Update: Earlier today, an Alaska State Trooper and a representative from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game traveled to Wales to investigate the polar bear attack that occurred yesterday. The remains of Myomick and Ongtowasruk were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The investigation revealed that Myomick and Ongtowasruk were walking between the school and the clinic when the bear attacked them.
Update 1/18/23: Poor weather conditions in the region and the lack of runway lights in Wales prevented Troopers and Alaska Department of Fish and Game personnel from making it to Wales. Troopers are continuing to make efforts to fly to Wales today. The adult female killed in the attack is identified as 24-year-old Saint Michael resident Summer Myomick. The juvenile is identified as her 1-year-old son Clyde Ongtowasruk. Next of kin has been notified. The attack reportedly occurred in the village near the school. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has been notified of the incident.
Original: On January 17, 2023, at 2:30 pm, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of a polar bear attack in Wales. Initial reports indicate that a polar bear had entered the community and had chased multiple residents. The bear fatally attacked an adult female and juvenile male – it was shot and killed by a local resident as it attacked the pair. Troopers and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are working to travel to Wales as weather conditions allow. Next of kin notifications are still in progress.

The Western Alaska Major Crimes Unit responded to the area and conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations. Their investigation revealed that 33-year-old Akiak resident Derek Williams had sexually abused two juveniles. Williams was arrested by Troopers and remanded to Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center on charges of Sexual Abuse of a Minor 1, Sexual Abuse of a Minor 2, Sexual Assault 1, Sexual Assault 2, and Assault 3.

Investigation revealed that her license to drive was revoked. Further her license had a restriction requiring her to have an ignition interlock device installed. The vehicle she was driving did not have one. She was issued summons for both misdemeanor offenses.

The victim reports an unknown person gained entry to their house with a key and stole several firearms which included two SKS rifles, a 45-70, a 20 gauge shotgun, a 12 gauge shotgun, along with a few other firearms. Additionally, AST located a crystal-llike substance in Josh's front left pocket that tested presumptively positive for Methamphetamine. On 01/18/2023 at approximately 1050 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a single motor vehicle collision with a moose at approximately mile 15 of the Tok Cutoff heading southbound. The driver was contacted, and no injuries were reported. Driver was able to depart the area with the vehicle sustaining some damage. The driver advised that the moose departed the area as well. Information regarding the moose was passed onto Glennallen Wildlife Troopers to further scout the area.

On January 17, 2023 at approximately 1000 hours, AST responded to TCI Construction Co to investigate a string of thefts on the business property. TCI reported that a group of people had walked onto the property over 4 instances between 01/09-01/17 and stole $6,000 worth of fittings and siphoned fuel from multiple company vehicles. AST is aware of the increase of thefts in the lower Fairbanks industrial area. AST Patrol has been advised to make an increased presence in the area. Business owners in the area are encouraged to report any crime or suspicious activity. Investigation is still ongoing.

During the patrol AST located Sean Donovan (age 51) of Fairbanks in the parking lot of an apartment complex on South Cushman. Donovan had an outstanding $5,000 felony warrant for his arrest for misconduct involving controlled substance in the third degree - probation violation. Donovan was placed under arrest on his warrant and remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center on $5,000 bail.

On February 1, 2023, Peter Waska, 37 of Tuluksak, Nelson Napoka, 42 of Tuluksak, Timothy Lott, 36 of Akiak, Peter Joe Napoka, 26 of Tuluksak, Jerry Charlie, 62 of Tuluksak, and Carl Napoka, 47 of Akiak, all pled guilty to Taking a Caribou During a Closed Season in GMU 18. The sentencing for each defendant was a $5,000 fine, $850 restitution, forfeiture of caribou meat, and forfeiture of the rifle used to commit the crimes.
ORIGINAL:
On January 13, 2023, AWT Bethel received a report of an illegally taken caribou while following up on an unrelated case in Tuluksak. Further investigation revealed Peter Waska, 37 of Tuluksak, Nelson Napoka, 42 of Tuluksak, Timothy Lott, 36 of Akiak, and Carl Napoka, 47 of Akiak, all took caribou in GMU 18 at the beginning of December 2022. Additionally, it was discovered Peter Joe Napoka, 26 of Tuluksak and Jerry Charlie, 62 of Tuluksak, each took a caribou, with Peter Joe using a .22 rimfire rifle. The caribou season in GMU 18 has been closed for approximately 3 years due to drastically low Mulchatna Caribou Herd population. Timothy Lott, Nelson Napoka, Peter Waska, Jerry Charlie, and Carl Napoka were each issued misdemeanor citations for Taking Caribou Closed Season and Unlawful Possession/Transportation of Game. Peter Joe Napoka was issued misdemeanor citations for Taking Caribou Closed Season, Unlawful Possession/Transportation of Game, and Unlawful Methods/Means for using a rimfire rifle. AWT Bethel seized the remaining caribou meat and rifles used to take the illegal animals as evidence. Arraignment has been set for February 1, 2023, in the Bethel Court.
