On 10/26/2024 at approximately 1650 hours Alaska State Troopers contacted Matthew Smith, age 37 of Wasilla, at a residence in Wasilla. Smith had an active arrest warrant (3PA-24-00173CR, Fail to appear for arraignment o/c Misconduct involving controlled substances in the fifth degree x2), he was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial.

On 10/26/2024 at approximately 1133 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to CRNA, for a report of an unresponsive person. Upon further investigation it was determined that Richard Wilson, 70, of Copper Center was found to be deceased. No foul play suspected. The decedent was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy. Next of Kin was notified.

On 8/25/2024 at approximately 2303 hours, AST received a call of a disturbance at a residence in Wasilla. AST responded, and an investigation revealed Richard Hacker III was intoxicated and threatening his neighbors. Richard was on conditions of release not to consume alcohol. Richard was arrested, transported, and remanded at Matsu Pretrial on a charge of Violating Conditions of Release where he was held with no bail.

UPDATE 10/26: Deputy Fire Marshals from the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to Mountain Village on October 25, 2024, to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. A preliminary investigation determined that the fire originated in one of the occupied holding cells and was likely started with a lighter by one of the two men detained. The fire caused significant damage to approximately 2/3 of the building. Village Police Officers were detaining both men for Title 47 holds.
The deceased man has been identified as 39-year-old Mountain Village resident Lawrence Chiklak. His next of kin have been notified, and his body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
ORIGINAL: On October 25, 2024, at 6:30 am, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a fire at the Mountain Village Police Department. Two adult males were being detained by the village police department at the time of the fire. One adult male was safely evacuated, and the second adult male was located deceased. An adult male village police officer is being treated for minor injuries at a Bethel area hospital. The Alaska State Troopers are investigating the scene, and the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office is responding to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The identity of the deceased man will occur once next of kin notifications are complete and he has been positively identified. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

On 10/25/2024 at approximately 2146 hours AST received a report of a motor vehicle collision at approximately 8 mile Chena Hot Springs Road. An investigation revealed Jesse Moore, age 30 of Fairbanks, was operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol which resulted in a crash that caused injury to multiple people. Jesse was arrested and remanded to FCC on the charges of DUI, Refusal to Submit, Leaving the Scene, and numerous counts of felony assault.

On 10-26-24, Delta AST observed a Black Gold Transport truck to be stuck in the northbound lane on a hill just north of the Tanana Bridge. A wide load with flagging vehicles coming around the S turns had caused the Black Gold Transport truck to slow down enough to lose traction. A single Delta AST trooper provided traffic control until the driver was able to put chains on the truck and continue driving. The incident was resolved in approximately 10 minutes.

On 10/26/2024, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in the Mat Su Valley conducted an artificial wildlife operation north of Wasilla. During the operation, Troopers observed Daryl Hansen, age 44 of Wasilla, shoot his shotgun at an artificial grouse while standing on the roadway. Hansen was cited for shooting from the roadway and hunting without a hunting license in possession. It is unlawful to shoot on, from, or across a roadway anywhere in the State of Alaska.
