On Feb. 1, Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan responded to Knudson Cove Road on a report that a truck, trailer and excavator went over an embankment and into the ocean with a person trapped inside. An investigation found that 80-year-old Darrell Vandergriff was offloading the excavator from the trailer when the truck and trailer rolled down a driveway, over the embankment and into the water. The truck and excavator were mostly submerged when troopers arrived. Troopers and responding medics removed Vandergriff from the excavator. He was brought to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His next of kin was notified.

On 02/05/2025 at approximately 0059 hours, AST received a report of an active disturbance at a residence in Wasilla. Upon arrival, investigation revealed Madrona Sergie, age 26 of Wasilla, damaged property of another household member. Madrona was placed under arrest for Criminal Mischief in the Fifth Degree DV and transported to MatSu Pre-Trial where she was remanded and held without bail.

On 02/05/2025 at approximately 1526 hours, Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with no rear license plate near Machen Rd. and Suzanna St. The driver later identified as Richard Alexander III, bailed on foot at the intersection of Suzanna St. and Stacy St. AST set up a perimeter and found Richard’s tracks in the snow and followed them. With the assistance of Wasilla Police Department’s drone, Troopers were able to locate Richard and take him into custody. Richard remanded at Mat-Su Pre-Trial on charges of Failure to stop for a police officer, Criminal Mischief, and DUI.

On 01/27/2025 at approximately 12:26 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a death. 66 YOA Kien Au, a crew member on board a large trawler about 110 miles from Dutch Harbor was found deceased in his room. Next of kin has been notified. The State Medical Examiner's office has received the remains and conducted an autopsy. It was determined that Mr. Au passed away from natural causes. No foul play has been suspected.

On 1/29/25 at approximately 2115 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of three overdue individuals en route from Selawik to Shungnak. SAR members searched the area and located them. Shungnak SAR transported all three to Shungnak. One injury has been reported. He has been medevaced to Kotzebue for his injuries.

On 02/01/2025 at approximately 20:56 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a 911 ping and a LIFE 360 activation from a cell phone. The phone's owner, 21 YOA Joshua Ramirez of Kodiak was located at mile 34 of the Chiniak Highway under the influence of alcohol with a firearm in his possession. It was believed that his phone was dropped from a moving vehicle. Investigation resulted in his arrest for Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the 4th Degree.

On 02/02/2025 at approximately 00:49 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a vehicle collision on the Chiniak Highway. The driver hit the guardrail, totaling his vehicle. No injuries were reported at the time of the incident, however, the driver stated he would get his shoulder checked out at the hospital. No further investigation is necessary. Case closed.

Stating in August of 2024, the Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) and Highway Interdiction Team (HIT) were involved in a drug investigation related to a residence in the Williwaw Subdivision. On 02/04/2025 a search warrant for the property was requested and approved. On 02/05/2025, personnel with SDEU, HIT, AST Patrol, Wasilla PD Patrol, and other agencies assisted in the execution of the search warrant. During the search warrant, two individuals were arrested on their active arrest warrants. The investigation is ongoing with other suspects identified.

On February 5, 2025, Alaska State Troopers arrested 72-year-old Harry Olsen on six felony charges of sexual abuse of a minor. An initial investigation determined Olsen sexually abused a juvenile female in Metlakatla in 2021 and 2022. Troopers believe Olsen may have abused or assaulted others. Anyone with more information about the case is asked to call (907) 451-5100, submit an anonymous tip online or by texting “AKTIPS” followed by the information to 847411. Olsen is in custody at the Ketchikan Correctional Center.
