On 05/01/2025 at approximately 1417 hours, Troopers received a report of a possible intoxicated driver leaving Gulkana Village and traveling toward Copper Center. Troopers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Upon further investigation, Monica Sanford, 41 of Gulkana was arrested and charged with DUI 2nd Offense. Sanford was remanded into custody and held on a $500 bond.

On May 1st, 2025 at approximately 1500 hours, AST received a report of a vehicle theft in the area of Willow. AST responded and located the vehicle along with the sole occupant, 42 year old Jacob Blackson, of Willow. Investigation revealed that Jacob had stolen the vehicle from another property in the vicinity. Jacob was remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial on charges of Vehicle Theft in the First Degree and Theft in the Second Degree.

On 5-1-25 at approximately 0041 hours Mat-Su Regional Hospital reported a patient, John Murphy III (26), assaulted multiple staff members. AST responded investigation revealed John caused physical injury to three staff members. John was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial for Assault 4 x3.

On April 30, 2025, at approximately 2150 hours, Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop at mile 360 of the northbound Richardson Highway. Following an investigation, the driver, Harry Pfleegor, was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Harry was arrested, transported, and remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center without further incident. Harry is charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence.

On 04/30/2025 at 1710 hours the Alaska State Troopers received a report of a single vehicle collision at approximately Mile 224 Parks Highway, about 14 miles north of Cantwell. Investigation determined the passenger, Shawny Frerichs, age 23 from Fairbanks briefly took control of the vehicle causing the vehicle to crash into a ditch. Frerichs was subsequently arrested for Reckless Endangerment (DV), DUI, and MIW 4th for being in possession of a handgun while impaired by alcohol. The driver of the vehicle, Viniek Hubbard, age 24 from Fairbanks was arrested for DUI (for being under the influence of alcohol) and MIW 4th (for possessing a handgun while impaired by alcohol). Both were remanded to FCC, where Frerichs was held without bail pending arraignment and Hubbard was released on his own recognizance once sober.

On May 1, 2025 at approximately 11:15am, Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks stopped a motorcycle driven by Juliette Zanfardino of Fairbanks for driving the wrong direction onto the Mitchell Expressway. Investigation revealed that she was highly intoxicated. She was arrested and ultimately remanded to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.

On May 1st 2025, at about 1740 hours, Troopers responded to the area of the 12-mile Road House bar for the report of a man who appeared to be lying in a ditch. Upon arrival and further investigation, Troopers identified the male as Hary Halsey, who was on conditions of release not to consume alcohol. Hary was placed under arrest for VCOR and was transported to FCC.

On 05/01/2025 at approximately 2000 hours, Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks conducted a traffic stop near MP 356 Parks Hwy on a Honda CRV for speeding. The driver, identified by as Jennifer Smart 41 YOA, was speeding as well as driving in violation of her restricted license. Smart was issued a citation for speeding and summons for violating her license restrictions.

UPDATE 5/1/25: On April 30, 2025, the Alaska State Troopers arrested 45-year-old Wasilla resident Sean Mobley on charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Manslaughter, and Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the First Degree. A thorough investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation determined that Mobley provided fentanyl to Toennis before he abandoned her on a Wasilla trail as she was experiencing an overdose. She ultimately died as a result of the overdose from the fentanyl that Mobley provided her. Mobley has been remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial facility. The case is being prosecuted by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions within the Alaska Department of Law.
UPDATE 11/19: The Alaska Bureau of Investigation continues to thoroughly investigate the suspicious death of Alena Toennis in Wasilla. During the autopsy, it was determined that there were no traumatic injuries to Alena present. Troopers have spoken with everyone who is involved, including the person who was last seen with her. The Alaska State Troopers believe that this is an isolated incident and not random. Investigators are not requesting any assistance from the public at this time and are awaiting forensic and toxicology results that will be crucial to charging determinations. We appreciate all of the information that Alaskans have reported and will provide additional information once it becomes available.
UPDATE 11/18: The deceased female has been positively identified as: 16-year-old Wasilla resident Alena Toennis. The death is being actively investigated as a suspicious death. Next of kin have been notified.
ORIGINAL: On November 15, 2024, at 7:21 am, the Alaska State Troopers were notified that a female was located deceased on a powerline trail in Wasilla. Evidence at the scene suggests that her death may be suspicious, and the Alaska Bureau of Investigation has assumed case responsibility. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, the name of the deceased is not being released at this time. Her body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office, and her next of kin have been notified.
