AK21070326Location: FairbanksType: Officer Involved Shooting
Update 6/28: The Alaska State Trooper that utilized their service weapon during this incident is identified as Alaska State Trooper Garrett Stephens, a one-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers currently assigned to Fairbanks patrol.
Original: On June 25, 2021, at approximately 0241 hours, an Alaska State Trooper in Fairbanks observed a silver Jeep driving recklessly near the Gold Rush Estates Trailer Park in Fairbanks. The silver Jeep nearly collided with a marked Trooper patrol vehicle, forcing the Trooper to take evasive action. The Trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle eventually led the Trooper to a wooded area between the Fairbanks Airport and the Tanana River flood dike, where the driver and sole occupant of the Jeep exited the vehicle and pointed what appeared to be an assault rifle at the Trooper. One Alaska State Trooper discharged their duty weapon, striking the driver. The driver was declared deceased at the scene and was later identified as 23-year-old, Dimitri Lanahan, of Anchorage. Lanahan’s next of kin has been notified.
Further investigation revealed the assault rifle was a replica designed to look like an assault rifle and did not have any markings that readily distinguished it from a firearm. Investigation also revealed that the vehicle and its license plates had been reported stolen in Anchorage and that Lanahan had an outstanding felony no-bail arrest warrant for Escape in the Second Degree.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is now conducting a thorough investigation into the incident; once complete, their investigation will then be reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions. The name of the trooper that discharged their service weapon will be released after 72 hours per department policy.
