AK20050097Location: NikiskiType: Warrant Arrest
On 7/29/2020 at approximately 2145 hours, Soldotna AST contacted John Love, age 32 of Nikiski, at an address in Nikiski in reference to a warrant for his arrest. Love was taken in to custody without incident and remanded to Wildwood Pretrial Facility. The warrant was for a single charge of Assault in the Fourth degree and his bail was set at $500.

AK20052462Location: NikiskiType: Misconduct Involving Weapons 3rd x2 / Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 4th x2
On 7/29/2020 at approximately 1933 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to assist the US Probation Office with a home visit at the residence of Edward Brighton, age 52 of Nikiski. Investigation revealed Brighton was in possession of oxycodone pills and methamphetamine. Further, he was residing in the home with two concealable firearms. He was arrested for two counts Misconduct Involving Weapons 3rd and Misconduct Involving Controlled Substances. Additionally, he was in violation of his conditions of probation for Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to distribute and Possession of Firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime. He was remanded at Wildwood Pretrial Facility and held with no bail pending arraignment.

AK20052200Location: Nikiski, AKType: Misconduct Involving Weapons 4th
On 7/30/2020 at approximately 2358 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a verbal disturbance off South Miller Loop. Investigation revealed that during the disturbance between neighbors, Dwayne William Meganack, age 31 of Nikiski had fired a handgun into the air, with reckless disregard to the risk of damage to other persons or property nearby. Meganack's weapon was seized and he was cited for Misconduct Involving Weapons 4th.

AK20052488Location: HopeType: Fatal Bear Mauling
Update: Daniel Schilling, age 46 of Hope, is identified as the victim of this fatal bear mauling.
On 7/29/20 at approximately 2207 hours AST was advised of a fatal bear mauling in the Hope area of the Chugach National Forest. It was reported that a Hope resident had been clearing a trail approximately 1 mile behind his property which is located off of mile 8 of the Hope Hwy. His wife became concerned when he was overdue, and their dog, which had been with him returned home alone. The body was located by family and friends in the area he had been working, deceased with wounds consistent with a bear attack. All subjects immediately departed the area. The trail is described as not ATV accessible. A joint response to the site of the mauling by AWT and USFS rangers is in progress. Updates to follow.

AK20052797Location: WasillaType: Theft II
On 07/30/2020, at approximately 1801 hours, the Criminal Suppression Unit conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a gold Audi for an equipment violation. Investigation resulted in the arrest of Trevor Catterson, Age 34 of Wasilla, for being in possession of a stolen firearm. Catterson was taken into custody and transported to Mat-Su Pre-Trial where he is held without bail.

AK20052669Location: WasillaType: REDDI, VID, DUI
On 7/30/20, at 1335 hours, AST responded to a VID/REDDI report involving a reported intoxicated driver on Limberlost Avenue near Vine Road in Wasilla. The driver was contacted attempting to move the vehicle out of the woodline and identified as Timothy R. Weston, 34 yoa of Wasilla. Weston failed SFST's and was arrested for DUI. His BAC was later measured at .162. Weston was provided a mandatory court AUC to appear in Palmer Court on 8/18/20 and released after processing to a sober adult. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

AK20052780Location: WasillaType: Warrant Arrest
On 7-30-20 at about 1814 hours, Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Vine Road and Hollywood Road in Wasilla. Troopers contacted Carla Benedix, age 28, of Wasilla. Benedix was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant. Benedix was arrested and remanded to the MatSu Pretrial facility, without incident.

AK20052781Location: PalmerType: REDDI/DUI/Refusal
On 7/30/20, at 1802 hours, AST responded to a reported REDDI vehicle that had driven through a metal gate at the UAF Experimental Farm near Mat-Su Regional Hospital, then continued to crash through metal barriers before becoming lodged on a metal barrier. The female driver was contacted as she walked away from the vehicle by responding Troopers and identified as Ginger L. Winter, 55 yoa of Homer. Winter acknowledged operating the vehicle and consuming alcohol. After failing field sobriety tests, Winter was arrested for DUI and later refused a chemical test. She was remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial on the above charges and a $50 failure to appear warrant from Homer, to be released when sober.

AK20052723Location: Moose CreekType: Assault 4th (DV)
On 07/30/2020 at 1545 hours the Alaska State Troopers received a report of a domestic disturbance in Moose Creek. Investigation determined Edgar Espinosa age 24 from Moose Creek assaulted a family member causing physical injury. Espinosa was located with the assistance of Eielson AFB Security Forces on base. Espinosa was arrested and remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center where he was held without bail pending arraignment. AST would like to thank Eielson AFB Security Forces for their assistance.

AK20052484Location: North PoleType: DWLS & No Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance
On 07/29/2020 at 2134 hours the Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks conducted a traffic stop for an equipment violation on Holmes Road in North Pole. Investigation determined the driver, Fawne Curtis-Palmeno, age 40 from Fairbanks did not have any motor vehicle insurance and her driver's license from another state was suspended. Curtis-Palmeno was issued a misdemeanor summons for No Liability Insurance and summons for DWLS.

AK20052499Location: Kenai River BeachType: Personal Use Violation, Closed Period
On 7/29/2020 AWT contacted Wade Rdechor, age 29 of Anchorage, dip net fishing in the Kenai River Personal Use area. Rdechor was observed fishing at 11:19 PM, 19 minutes after the closing of the fishery. Rdechor was issued a citation with bail set at $120 in the Kenai District Court.

AK Bureau of Highway Patrol
AK20055216Location: Mat-Su WestType: MVC-F x 2
UPDATE: The names of the decedents are Michael Price, 65, and Esther Price, 50, both of Wasilla. Their next of kin has been notified. The driver of the other vehicle is identified as Christopher Mohar, 38 of Houston. Investigation continues.
Update: on 7/29/2020 at approximately 1300 hours, AST will be operating a UAS for approximately one hour.
On 7/28/2020 at approximately 1938 hours, Mat-Com received a 911 report of a head on collision at approximately mile post 54 of the Parks Highway, near Hawk Lane. Approximately at the same time as the 911 call, a member of Houston Fire pulled up on scene. It was reported that a white Honda Accord didn’t negotiate the turn in the road and hit a 2012 Dodge 1500 head on. Two occupants of the Honda were declared deceased on scene. The sole occupant of the Dodge had non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Mat-Su Regional. The Highway is currently down to one lane. The road is expected to fully reopen at approximately 2230 hours. Next of kin for the decedents have not been notified. Investigation continues.
