    Type: Fatal Bear Mauling

    Dispatch Text:

    Update: Daniel Schilling, age 46 of Hope, is identified as the victim of this fatal bear mauling.

    On 7/29/20 at approximately 2207 hours AST was advised of a fatal bear mauling in the Hope area of the Chugach National Forest. It was reported that a Hope resident had been clearing a trail approximately 1 mile behind his property which is located off of mile 8 of the Hope Hwy. His wife became concerned when he was overdue, and their dog, which had been with him returned home alone. The body was located by family and friends in the area he had been working, deceased with wounds consistent with a bear attack. All subjects immediately departed the area. The trail is described as not ATV accessible. A joint response to the site of the mauling by AWT and USFS rangers is in progress. Updates to follow.

    Type: Fail to Stop / DUI / VCOR

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8/3/2020 at approximately 0228 hours, Soldotna AST attempted to stop a 2013 Ford Explorer for erratic driving at the intersection of Frogberry and Eagle Lake Drive in Kenai.  The vehicle failed to stop, and attempted to elude AST.  The vehicle ultimately came to a stop in a driveway.  The driver was identified as 23 year old Kayla Anderson of Soldotna.  Further investigation found Anderson to be under the influence of alcohol and additionally on conditions of release in a separate criminal case.  Anderson was remanded to Wildwood Pretrial Facility on charges of Fail to Stop in the First Degree, DUI, and VCOR.  Anderson was held without bail pending arraignment.

    On 08/02/2020, at approximately 1021 hours, Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on Kalifornsky Beach Rd. The driver was stopped for failing to stop at a stop sign. Investigation revealed the driver Elizer Demesa ,65, of Anchorage had been dip net fishing without a personal use permit. He was issued a citation for Failing to obtain a personal use permit.

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8/3/20 at approximately 0342 hours Alaska State Troopers responded to a report of a natural death off of Beverly Lakes Rd in Wasilla. ROBERT LINCOLN age of 79 of Wasilla was found deceased in his residence. Next of kin was on scene. No foul play was suspected, SME was notified.

    On 8/2/20, at 2017 hours, AST responded to a domestic disturbance on South Hood Court in Wasilla. The investigation revealed the A.L. (age 17) had assaulted her mother by punching her three or four times, which caused pain. During the investigation, an intoxicated A.L. assaulted a Trooper was kicking him in the face, causing pain. A.L. was arrested and remanded into the Mat-Su Youth Facility.

    Type: Bear Mauling

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8/2/2020 at approximately 1135 hours, Kodiak Police Department received a report from Donald Zimmerman age 71 of Kodiak advising he had just been mauled by a bear on Pillar Mountain.  AWT, AST, Kodiak Police Department and EMS responded to the scene and located Zimmerman approximately .5 miles from the road on a trail.  Zimmerman was transported to the road and taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center by Ambulance in stable condition. AWT and ADF&G searched the area but did not locate the bear. Zimmerman had been jogging on the trail when the incident occurred.

    Dispatch Text:

    On 7/31/2020 at about 2319 hours, Alaska State Troopers (AST) in Bethel received a report of a deceased person in Tununak. Josephine Link, age 56 of Tununak, was found unresponsive in an open field in the village. Due to the nature of the initial report, investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation - Major Crimes Unit responded to the village with Bethel-based patrol troopers. Josephine's remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office.

    Type: Sexual Assault 1 x 3, Kidnapping x 3, Assault 2 x 3, Assault 3

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8/2/2020 at about 1323 hours, Alaska State Troopers (AST) in Bethel received a report of assault from the village of Akiachak. Further investigation by Bethel patrol troopers and the Bethel-based Violent Offenders Unit revealed Ben Moses, age 22 of Akiachak, physically and sexually assaulted a woman in his home over a period of several hours earlier that morning. AST arrested Moses and remanded him to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center (YKCC) on three counts of Sexual Assault 1, three counts of Kidnapping, three counts of Assault 2, and one count of Assault 3.

    On 07/30/2020, at approximately 0435 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a male being in violation of his conditions of release.  The investigation revealed that Alexie Gust, age 42 of New Stuyahok, had violated his conditions of release from a previous arrest. Gust was arrested and transported to the Dillingham Jail where he was remanded, without bail. on two counts of VCOR.

    On 07/31/2020, at approximately 0832 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of an assault in Ekwok. The investigation revealed that Fred Hurley, age 28 of Ekwok, assaulted a family member and violated his conditions of release. Hurley was not located and an arrest warrant was granted.

    On 07/31/2020, at approximately 2123 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of an assault In New Stuyahok. Troopers flew to the village and the investigation revealed that John Etuckmelra, age 30 of New Stuyahok, assaulted a family member and violated his conditions of release. He was arrested and transported to the Dillingham Jail where he was remanded, without bail. on charges of Assault 2 (DV), Assault 3 (DV), Assault 4 (DV), Unlawful Contact 1, and VCOR. At arraignment his bail was set at $25,000.00.

    On 08/01/2020, at approximately 1840 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a call from a Village Police Officer in Manokotak as he was in contact with a person that possibly had a warrant for his arrest.  The investigation revealed that Ryan Nanalook, age 33 of Manokotak, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Nanalook was arrested and transported to the Dillingham Jail where he was remanded with a bail of $250.00 cash.

    On 08/01/2020, at approximately 2340 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a call of a disorderly conduct issue.  Further investigation revealed that Casey Konukpeok, age 20 of New Stuyahok, forced entry into another person's house, broke items in the residence, put the resident in fear of assault, attempted to assault the Village Police Officer, and resisted arrest.  Konukpeok was arrested and transported to the Dillingham Jail where he was remanded, without bail, on charges of Burglary 1, Criminal Mischief 3, Assault 4 (DV), Disorderly Conduct, Assault 4, and Resisting Arrest.

    Dispatch Text:

    On August 2, 2020 at 1929 hours Alaska State Troopers in Tok conducted a traffic stop on a 2006 Chevy Malibu for a moving violation near milepost 1319 Alaska Highway. The driver was identified as Kyle Stevens, age 35 of Northway. Investigation revealed that Stevens was driving under the influence of alcohol. Stevens was arrested for Felony DUI, due to two previous convictions for DUI within ten years. Stevens later refused to provide a sample of his breath for chemical testing and was additionally charged with Refusal of a Chemical Test. Multiple citations were also issued. Stevens was transported to the Fairbanks Correctional Center where he was held without bail pending arraignment.

    On 8/3/20 at approximately 0333 hours AST attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for multiple violations near College Rd.  The vehicle failed to stop while driving recklessly in the Aurora Dr neighborhood, subsequently crashing into a fence.  The driver fled on foot and was detained after a brief foot pursuit.  The driver was identified as James Skogstad, age 44, of Fairbanks.  James was placed under arrest and remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center under the charges of fail to stop at the direction of a police officer, resisting arrest, violating conditions of release (x2), misuse of registration, and driving on a revoked driver’s license.  Skogstad was held without bail.  Skogstad was also issued multiple citations.

    Type: MVC-Fatal

    Dispatch Text:

    On August 1, 2020 at 0550 hours, AST received a report from a motorist stating he struck two bicyclists near mile 125 Steese Highway. The location is approximately 2.8 miles west of Central.

    The two bicyclists were identified as Michael M. Gentry (37 yoa of EAFB) and Jay M. Butler (39 yoa of EAFB).  Gentry died as a result of the collision and Butler sustained non-life-threatening injuries. AST notified Rescue Coordination Center. Emergency medical personnel from USARAK 152nd Aviation Regiment "GSAB"  at Ft. Wainwright responded to the scene via helicopter and airlifted both men to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.  

    AST responded to the scene to conduct a scene investigation and witness interviews. The highway remained open during the investigation. The vehicle driver, Gentry and Butler were traveling as a group. They were taking turns riding bicycles and driving the support vehicle, a 2015 Dodge Ram truck. The driver inadvertently struck Butler and Gentry as he was following them on the Steese Hwy.

    AST is still investigating this collision in concert with the State Medical Examiner’s Office. AST has been in close contact with EAFB command staff, Gentry's next of kin was notified. The identity of the driver will be withheld until the investigation is complete.

    Type: Theft of Stop/Street Signs

    Dispatch Text:

    On 8-3-20 at approximately 1451 hours it was reported to the Alaska State Troopers in Tok that the Stop sign and accompanying street signs on the corner of Scoby Way and W. Spruce Street have been stollen and/or damaged multiple times since May.  Twice the entire sign assembly has been stollen and twice it has been ripped out of the ground and left in the woods nearby.  The sign assembly, with Stop sign and street signs, is valued at approximately $900.00.  The total damages are estimated to be over $1,800.00; plus, dozens of man hours to replace/repair the signs and the inconvenience to the community at having their signs vandalized and stollen.  These thefts are felony level and the Alaska State Troopers would encourage anyone with information to contact the Tok State Troopers Post at (907) 883-5111.

    On 8/1/2020 at approximately 2306 hours, AST Dispatch received a report of a disturbance at 2121 Richard Highway. Investigation revealed Brannon Richart, 33 of North Pole, caused physical injury to another person, placed another person in fear of serious physical injury with a dangerous instrument, and damaged property of another. Brannon was arrested and transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center where he was remanded for Assault 3rd (DV), Assault 4th (DV), and Criminal Mischief 5th (DV). He is being held without bail.

    On 08/03/2020 at 1619 hours the Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks received an inquiry regarding child custody.  Investigation determined Julie Frankson, age 19 from Point Hope violated her Conditions of Release by contacting a family member she was directed by the court not to contact.  Frankson was arrested and remanded to FCC for Unlawful Contact 1st and VCOR where she was held without bail pending arraignment.  Frankson had been released from FCC approximately 2 hours prior to the incident.

    On 7/19/20, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island located and seized a personal use dungy pot in the marine waters of Coffman Cove that did not have the required biodegradable escape mechanism. Investigation showed the gear was being fished by Gary Wilburn, age 73 of Coffman Cove. Wilburn was later contacted and issued a minor offense citation for the violation and his gear was returned.

    Dispatch Text:

    On 08/02/2020 at approximately 1925 hours, Kodiak AWT contacted William Craig, age 49 of Kodiak, operating an ATV on the Pillar Creek Beach access road as he was about to pull onto Monashka Bay Road. Initially Craig provided false names but his identity was eventually disclosed. Investigation revealed Craig had been operating the ATV while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Additionally, Craig was found to have had two previous DUI convictions. Craig was taken into custody and transported to the Kodiak AST post where he refused to provide a breath sample.  At approximately 2056 hours, Craig was remanded into the Kodiak City Jail for a felony DUI, felony Refusal and Providing False Information.
