AK22080615
Location: JuneauType: Search And RescueDispatch Text:
On 8/5/2022 Alaska Wildlife Troopers received report that Connor Beckman, of Nevada, had not returned home from a hike up Mount Roberts and Sheep Mountain on the afternoon on 8/4. Beckman was not prepared to overnight in the field and had no food or water. Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEADOGS were mobilized along with concerned family and friends who began searching the trail system. The US Coast Guard sent a helicopter from Sitka Station who flew the area but weather prevented effective aerial searching.
At about 1405 hours on 8/5/22 Beckman walked out to the trailhead where he was met by searchers. He had unexpectedly spent the night on Sheep Mountain after a weather system moved in while he was on the mountain and prevented him from finding the way down due to dense fog. The weather system also brought strong wind and rain so Beckman made a rock wind break and dug into the rocks for shelter for the night. In the morning he resumed looking for the trail back down, which he eventually did. He walked in the dense fog not knowing where the trail he found would lead. He eventually found his way to the trailhead.
Beckman reported no injuries. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers thank the hours or work by Juneau Mountain Rescue, South East Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, and the US Coast Guard for their efforts in the search.

Location: Chena Hot Springs RoadType: Fatal Fire InvestigationDispatch Text:
Update 12/27: The deceased male from this fire has been positively identified by the state medical examiner as 61-year-old Fairbanks resident Bart Stewart.
Original: On Friday, August 5, 2022, at approximately 4:15 am, the Alaska State Troopers received a 911 call reporting a residential structure fire at 5100 block of Chena Hot Springs Road, which is located outside of a fire protection area. Troopers arrived on scene to find a single story structure heavily engulfed. Preliminary interviews with friends and neighbors reported that the homeowner and sole occupant of the structure, an adult male, had been seen the evening prior, and that both of his primary vehicles and 4-wheeler were in the driveway, with a high probability that he was inside the structure. An Alaska Department of Public Safety Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM) from Fairbanks responded to conduct an origin and cause investigation. North Star Volunteer Fire Department (NSVFD) responded to assist with cooling the scene to facilitate the investigation. The remains of a deceased human adult were located inside. The remains have been transferred to the State Medical Examiner for autopsy and positive identification. A preliminary investigation of the origin and cause revealed that the fire originated in the living room and spread throughout the structure.
