UPDATE:

The Alaska State Trooper involved in the shooting incident in the Mat-Su Valley on 3/08/2020 that fired their service weapon is identified as Trooper Chris Russell, 17 and a half years of service with the Alaska State Troopers.

The Alaska State Trooper involved in the shooting incident in the Mat-Su Valley on 3/08/2020 that utilized less lethal force by firing their taser is identified as Trooper Amy Nelson, 14 years of service with the Alaska State Troopers.

The AST Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI) is investigating the totality of the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident. Once the investigation is complete, it will be forwarded to Special Prosecutions, within the Department of Law, for review.

UPDATE: The decedent is identified as Aaron Tolen, 37 of Wasilla. Next of kin has been notified.

When AST responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence off of Bonaparte in the Mat-Su Valley, Aaron Tolen was contacted. Tolen got into a physical altercation with the sole Trooper on scene inside of the residence. Back-up arrived and witnessed Tolen fighting the trooper on the floor. Tolen was ultimately shot by AST and succumbed to his injuries on scene.

Original Text: On 3/8/2020 at approximately 1915 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a 911 call involving a domestic disturbance. AST responded. At approximately 1955 hours, AST on scene reported that shots had been fired. AST personnel did not report any injuries. Ultimately, a subject on scene was reported deceased. Investigation is ongoing; updates to follow. AST personnel involved in the OIS will be placed on a 72-hour administrative leave, per department policy. Following the 72-hour administrative leave, AST personnel that utilized their service  weapon during the incident will be identified. The decedent will be identified after next of kin notification is accomplished.
