Update: On 7/13/2020, Alaska State Troopers were notified that the young child succumbed to injuries sustained in the boating collision. The decedent is identified as Danielle Berlin-Walker, 5 of Anchorage. Investigation revealed that the David Berlin and his passengers were in an Alweld 18-foot flat bottom skiff navigating a blind turn on a channel on the Johnson River, heading up river, when a more substantial 21-foot skiff, traveling on the same channel, heading down river, was navigating the blind turn. The 21-foot skiff had 9 occupants at the time of the collision; the skiff operator is identified as Dennis Demientieff, 45 of Kasigluk. Demientieff and Berlin both took evasive action, but turned toward the same direction and collided. The heavier 21-foot skiff significantly damaged the lighter flat bottomed skiff. No injuries were reported to the occupants of Demientieff’s skiff. Investigation is ongoing.
Original text: On 7/12/2020 at about 1449 hours, AST was advised that a boater traveling to Bethel on the Kuskokwim River observed boat wreckage involving two boats. When the complainant stopped to assist, an adult male was located deceased inside one of the boats along with a child that had life threatening injuries. Two other adults from that boat were also located with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries. All injured parties were transported to receive treatment of injuries. The deceased has been identified as David Berlin, 51 of Bethel. The condition of the occupant(s) of the other boat has not yet been reported. Next of kin for the decedent has been notified. Investigation into the boating collision is ongoing.
