On August 1, 2020 at 0550 hours, AST received a report from a motorist stating he struck two bicyclists near mile 125 Steese Highway. The location is approximately 2.8 miles west of Central.
The two bicyclists were identified as Michael M. Gentry (37 yoa of EAFB) and Jay M. Butler (39 yoa of EAFB). Gentry died as a result of the collision and Butler sustained non-life-threatening injuries. AST notified Rescue Coordination Center. Emergency medical personnel from USARAK 152nd Aviation Regiment "GSAB" at Ft. Wainwright responded to the scene via helicopter and airlifted both men to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
AST responded to the scene to conduct a scene investigation and witness interviews. The highway remained open during the investigation. The vehicle driver, Gentry and Butler were traveling as a group. They were taking turns riding bicycles and driving the support vehicle, a 2015 Dodge Ram truck. The driver inadvertently struck Butler and Gentry as he was following them on the Steese Hwy.
AST is still investigating this collision in concert with the State Medical Examiner’s Office. AST has been in close contact with EAFB command staff, Gentry's next of kin was notified. The identity of the driver will be withheld until the investigation is complete.
