UPDATE: The Troopers that discharged their firearms during this incident are identified as:

UPDATE: On 10/17/20, at approximately 13:22, AST was notified by a citizen of a person matching the suspect description near mile 131 of the Richardson Hwy. Troopers responded and Mark Heinz was subsequently taken into custody without incident. Heinz is being transported to a local medical facility for medical clearance prior to being transported to Mat Su Pretrial Facility. The road has reopened to through traffic. Investigation continues.
UPDATE: On 10/16/20, at approximately 0931 hours, Troopers in Glennallen received a REDDI report concerning a vehicle that almost caused a collision near the intersection of Gakona Lodge Road and E. Tok Cut-Off Highway. Around 0940 hours, Trooper Dispatch received a call from someone at the Gakona Lodge reporting the suspect vehicle was traveling toward the Richardson Highway.
Glennallen AST located the vehicle at 1004 hours about two miles east of the Tok Cut-Off Highway. The Trooper initiated a traffic stop but the driver failed-to-yield and attempted to flee. During the resulting pursuit, the driver of the suspect vehicle discharged a firearm at the Trooper near Mile 157 Richardson Highway. The Trooper was not injured and returned fire, but the suspect continued to flee. The suspect subsequently stopped and abandoned his vehicle, departed the area, and ran into the wood line near Mile 149 Richardson Highway.
Members of the Southcentral, Northern, and Southern Special Emergency Reaction Teams (SERT) responded, along with Helo-3, members of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI), and ‘B’ and ‘D’ Detachments’ General Investigation Units (GIU). AST is receiving operational and technical assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Parks Service, and Village Public Safety Officer Program.
The Richardson Highway remains closed between approximately Mile 134 and 165. Updates will be provided.
ORIGINAL POST: AST is asking motorists on the Richardson Hwy not to pick up hitchhikers in the vicinity of mile 134-165. AST is looking for Mark Emery Heinz. Heinz should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information please call 911. The Richardson Hwy is closed between miles 134-165 during this active incident.
