On 11/19/2020, at approximately 2305 hours, AST attempted to conduct a traffic stop for moving violations on the Kenai Spur Highway near Beaver Loop Road in Kenai. The operator of the vehicle, John Q. Wilson, age 24 of Soldotna, failed to stop. Wilson eluded troopers for several miles before getting his vehicle stuck on a four wheel drive trail in a remote location near Spirit Lake. Wilson fled his vehicle on foot into a heavily wooded area. AST assisted by Kenai PD and Soldotna PD officers attempted to locate Wilson for over an hour with no success. Temperatures that morning dropped well below 20°f. Approximately five hours later Wilson was located about a quarter mile from where he had fled his vehicle. He had severe frost bite on extensive portions of his extremities and was no longer able to walk. AST had to carry him for almost an eighth of a mile through the woods due his injuries. Medics transported him to the Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment. Due to ongoing medical treatment for exposure Wilson was issued misdemeanor citations for driving while under the influence of controlled substances, driving while license revoked, second degree fail to stop at the direction of a police officer, and violating condition of release as he was on release conditions for a previous DUI charge.
