Update 4/21: On April 19, 2021, at approximately 1015 hours, a Chitna area resident contacted Alaska State Troopers in Glennallen and reported locating a deceased male. Troopers and a VPSO responded to the scene. The body was located near the wood line, approximately 70 yards from where Ian Lutz’s vehicle went into a ditch. The remains were sent to the SME’s office for positive identification. On 4/21 the deceased was positively identified as 34-year-old Anchorage resident Ian Lutz who was reported missing on February 2, 2021. A scene investigation was conducted, and no signs of foul play were identified. Next of kin have been notified.
Update: 2/8/21: The Alaska State Troopers have suspended their active search for Ian Michael Lutz In Chitina after a week of exhaustive search efforts including sUAS aerial imaging of the area, the deployment of multiple MATSAR K9 search teams, and the use of the Alaska Department of Public Safety’s HELO3 to conduct an aerial search of the area. If new information or evidence is discovered the Alaska State Troopers will reevaluate the search at that time. Next of kin have been notified.
Original 2/3: On 02/02/2021 at approximately 2009 hours, AST received a report that 34 year old Ian Michael Lutz of Anchorage has been missing since approximately 2/1/2021 at 2300 hours. His vehicle was found empty down an embankment near the Chitna village apartments. AST responded to the area and conducted a hasty search. Lutz was not located. The weather during the time Lutz went missing was 20 to 30 degrees below zero. AST, AWT, and VPSO personnel responded back to the area to search during daylight hours. On 2/3/2021, from approximately 1400 hours to 1800 hours, AST will utilize a sUAS to search the area surrounding vehicle.
