Dispatch Text:

Update 4/7: On 4/1 a Deputy Fire Marshal arrived in Metlakatla to conduct a cause and origin investigation at the request of Metlakatla officials. The origin of the fire has been determined as the area immediately surrounding the wood stove, which had been fully stoked just prior to the structure fire being reported to local officials. The deceased resident has been identified as 36-year-old Metlakatla resident Joshua Maxey. Next of kin have been notified.

Original: On March 30, 2021, at approximately 0400 hours, the Metlakatla Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) responded to a report of a residential trailer fire.  Initially, all occupants had escaped, however, one of the residents went back into the trailer in an attempt to locate a dog, and did not return.  MVFD arrived on scene to find the trailer heavily engulfed.  After performing an aggressive fire attack, fire crews located the resident within the structure.  The resident succumbed to his injuries. An Alaska Department of Public Safety Deputy Fire Marshal is responding to Metlakatla to assist the community by conducting an origin and cause investigation.

*This release has been updated to reflect that the resident succumbed to his injuries and was not medevaced.
