On 04-03-21 at approximately 1116 hours, AKRCC (Alaska Rescue Coordination Center) contacted the Alaska State Troopers to report a pending Search & Rescue situation. RCC stated 3 aircraft, a Cessna 180 and two Piper PA18, along with 5 persons were stranded on the Ruth Glacier, located at the base of Denali, inside of the Denali National Park at an altitude of approximately 4,500 feet.
Further investigation revealed the group had flown to the Ruth Glacier on 04-02-21 and spent the night on the glacier after inclement weather moved in and they were unable to fly out. Due to limited survival resources, the group requested a rescue. Due to a lack of aerial resources, the National Park Service requested assistance from AST. Between AST, RCC, and the National Park Service, arrangements were made for an emergency hire of several guides to hike to the group. On 04-03-21, the guides arrived on scene. The guides and stranded group hiked to the Sheldon Chalet located approximately 3 ½ miles away. The group will shelter in place until the weather clears. The group is anticipated to retrieve and fly out their aircraft at a later time when it is safe to do so. AST wishes to thank AKRCC and the NPS for their assistance.
