On April 15, 2021, at approximately 0800 hours, Alaska State Troopers were notified that a man had been shot inside a residence in Kotlik and was deceased. Due to poor weather in the area on 4/15, Troopers from Bethel were unable to travel to Kotlik until 4/16. Based on the investigation, 49-year-old Kotlik resident Yago Pitka was inside the home of another Kotlik resident when Pitka was asked to leave; however, he refused to leave the residence. The resident then produced a firearm and fired at Pitka, striking him fatally. Pitka was declared deceased at the scene. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed, and the case will be turned over to the district attorney for review. Next of kin have been notified.
