UPDATE: Allen Dewitt Minish, age 61 of Chitna, was surveying alone near MP 117 Richardson HWY, approximately a half mile off the roadway when he unknowingly walked up on an adult brown bear. The bear charged and attacked him causing puncture wounds and lacerations to his head. After the brief encounter, the bear left the area and there was no indication that the bear was harmed in the incident. Minish is being treated for serious injuries at an Anchorage hospital.

On 05/18/2021 at approximately 1118 hours, The Alaska State Troopers in Glennallen were notified of a bear mauling near the Richardson Highway, near mile 117, in the Gulkana area.  A 61 year old male from Chitna was in the wooded area conducting a land survey when the encounter with a suspected brown bear occurred.  Troopers and local Fire and Rescue personnel located the male and helped him to the Alaska Pipeline road.  The male was ultimately flown to an Anchorage hospital for his injuries.  The bear was not located.
