Update 6/9: After a thorough investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI) Ms. Hanson’s death is believed to have been caused by exposure/hypothermia after a round trip in a small aluminum skiff to Dillingham and back to New Stuyahok. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident. The State Medical Examiner’s findings are consistent with the ABI’s investigation, however, toxicology results are still pending.
Update 3:35 pm: The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old New Stuyahok resident Rachel Alexandra Hanson. Her remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. Next of kin have been notified. The investigation surrounding Hanson’s death is ongoing.
Original: On June 6, 2021, at approximately 1500 hours, Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham were notified by Kanakanak Hospital that a deceased individual had been located inside of a skiff along the shore in New Stuyahok. Dillingham-based Troopers responded to the scene and secured it. Investigators and crime scene technicians from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation in Anchorage have responded to New Stuyahok to assist with the investigation.
