On July 17, 2021, at approximately 0338 hours, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a single-vehicle rollover collision in Soldotna. Troopers responded and discovered three individuals at the collision scene; the driver fled on foot prior to AST arrival. Two of the passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment, and the third passenger, 27-year-old Idaho resident Samuel Helmuth, was deceased. At approximately 0530 hours, Troopers located the driver, 50-year-old Soldotna resident David Casey, at his residence a short distance from the crash scene. Casey was taken into custody without incident and remanded at Wildwood Correctional Center on charges of Murder 2, Assault 3 x2, DUI, MIW 4, Reckless Endangerment, and Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident. Next of kin were notified.
