On July 28, 2021, at approximately 0315 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a report that an adult male was shot in the village of Russian Mission. Troopers from Bethel and St. Mary’s attempted to respond via state aircraft in the morning, but poor weather in Russian Mission prevented their flight. Troopers were able to land in Russian Mission at approximately 1350 hours. A preliminary investigation revealed six people were returning from a boat trip at approximately 0300 hours when they came upon three males hiding in the woods waiting for them armed with long guns. A fight ensued over a shotgun, and it fired. A second shooter fired a shotgun and struck an adult male in the torso and right arm. The injured man ran and was later picked up and brought to the village clinic. The rest of the boating party retreated to a residence when moments later, approximately five rounds were fired from a shotgun into the residence. Four adults and seven children were in the residence when it was fired upon. All took cover, and no one was injured. All suspects fled the area and were not located after Troopers searched the village. The injured adult male was medevaced to an Anchorage area hospital for medical treatment. The investigation continues.
