On 11/15/2021 at approximately 0850 hours, Houston Fire Department responded to a report of a residential fire on South Winterhaven Drive in Big Lake. Initial reports indicated a possible explosion inside the residence. A relative of the deceased who lives in a camper on the property, reported that Dena Cooper, age 76, had come to his camper and told him there was an explosion in her house. She notified him she was going to a neighbor’s house to seek shelter. Fire crews arrived and discovered a fire in a rear bedroom. A neighborhood search for Cooper was conducted by AST and Cooper was not located. The fire department conducted a primary search and located an adult female inside the residence. EMS attempted lifesaving efforts, however Cooper succumbed to her injuries. A Department of Public Safety Deputy Fire Marshal responded from Anchorage to conduct an origin and cause investigation. The room of origin was determined to be the master bedroom on the rear of the structure. The cause of the fire was determined to be resistance heating due to loose connections in an electrical outlet. The State Medical Examiner has taken possession of the remains for autopsy. Next of kin was on scene.
