Update: The State Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identify the victim as 58 year old Charles Erhart of Tanana. Next of kin was notified of the positive ID. The Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire originated on the floor adjacent to the woodstove and was classified as Accidental.
On 11/ 17/2021, at approximately 2121 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks received a report of a residential structure fire in Tanana. The homeowner and single occupant was unaccounted for at the time of the fire. Approximately one (1) hour into the fire suppression efforts, human remains were discovered inside the structure, and they are believed to be the homeowner. Members of the Tanana Fire Department continued their suppression efforts and remained on scene throughout the night. On 11/ 18/2021, AST and a Deputy Fire Marshal from Fairbanks flew to the community of Tanana to conduct the investigation. It was determined that the homeowner had been seen by members of the community approximately 1.5-2 hours prior to the fire, and was the only individual known to reside there. The area of origin was identified as the area surrounding the woodstove. The victim has been transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification. At this time no foul play is suspected. Next of kin for the homeowner has been notified.
