On December 12, 2021, the Alaska Bureau of Investigation was notified that 2-year-old St. Paul Island resident Joshua Rukovishnikoff was medevaced to an Anchorage area hospital with a serious head injury and was not likely to survive. On December 12, 2021, Joshua died at the Anchorage hospital and his remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner for autopsy. After a thorough investigation Troopers determined that Joshua’s guardians 31-year-old Steven Melovidov and 28-year-old Sophie Myers-Melovidov, both of St. Paul, had killed Joshua in their home and attempted to mislead investigators over the course of the investigation. On December 28, 2021, Troopers traveled to St. Paul Island and arrested both Steven Melovidov and Sophie Myers-Melovidov on charges of Murder in the First Degree. They were booked into the Anchorage Correctional Complex on 12/29/2021*. The Alaska State Troopers would like to thank the St. Paul Police Department for their assistance during the investigation.
*This release has been updated to reflect the date that both were booked into the Anchorage Correctional Complex.
