On Saturday, June 10, 2023, just after midnight, the Alaska State Troopers received a report from Tribal Police Officers in the village of Chefornak that they had just been shot at by Christopher Wasili, 39, of Chefornak, with a rifle. One of the Tribal Police Officers returned fire and shot Wasili with a personally owned handgun. Wasili was taken to the local clinic, and despite lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to the gunshot wound at 3:10am. Nobody else was injured during the incident. Next of kin have been notified, and his body is being sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation has launched a thorough investigation into this shooting.
