On March 16, 2024, at 5:43 am, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a death in Nunam Iqua. Troopers responded to the community to investigate the death. A preliminary investigation determined that 30-year-old Nunam Iqua resident Joan Camille was reported as deceased by an adult male who she was traveling with between Nunam Iqua and Emmonak by snowmachine. The circumstances surrounding Camille’s death was suspicious and her body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. On March 19, 2024, following a thorough investigation by Alaska Bureau of Investigation, Western Major Crimes Unit, 25-year-old Fredrick Abraham of Nunam Iqua was arrested for Murder 2, Negligent Homicide, Assault 1, and Assault 3 by priors. Next of kin for Camille was notified.
