On June 9, 2026, the Alaska Bureau of Investigation's Special Crimes Investigation Unit began investigating a report of a sexual assault that occurred in 2024 between a correctional officer and a female inmate housed at Fairbanks Correctional Center. Their investigation revealed that 47-year-old Nenana resident Richard Johnson had sexually assaulted an adult female inmate inside a prisoner transportation vehicle in February 2024 while conducting his duties as a correctional officer. On August 19, 2026, Johnson was remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center on charges of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree.
