On April 28, 2025, at 1:57 pm, the Alaska State Troopers received multiple 911 calls about a plane crash in Nanwalek near the airport. The Alaska State Troopers began responding to the scene as first responders and good samaritans in Nanwalek began assessing the three adults on the airplane and providing medical assistance. One adult male passenger was medevaced to an Anchorage area hospital with serious injuries, and the two other occupants were killed in the crash. Troopers and NTSB investigators arrived in Nanwalek on DPS HELO 3 and identified the deceased adults as 48-year-old Homer resident and pilot Daniel Bunker and 37-year-old Anchorage resident Jenny Miller. The NTSB has begun an investigation into the cause of the crash. Miller and Bunker’s next of kin have been notified and their bodies have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The Alaska State Troopers would like to thank Guardian Flight, Lifemed, Maritime Helicopters, the US Coast Guard, and the Alaska State Park Rangers for their assistance with the crash.
