Dispatch Text:
On July 24, 2026, at 1:36 pm, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a vehicle collision at mile post 62 of the Sterling Highway. A preliminary investigation determined that a Dodge pickup truck was traveling southbound when it drifted into the northbound lane striking a motorhome traveling in the opposite direction. A passenger in the motorhome, 64-year-old Anchorage resident Karen Bronga was declared deceased on the scene. The adult male driver of the motorhome was transported to a Kenai Peninsula area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The adult female driver of the pickup was medevaced to an Anchorage area hospital with serious injuries. Bronga's next of kin have been notified, and her body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy. The highway was closed for approximately 8 hours for investigation and vehicle removal which required dumpsters to be brought in to collect the large amounts of debris from the collision. The cause of the investigation remains under investigation, however, at this time alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
