    On July 11, 2023, at 2103 hours Alaska State Troopers responded to Mendenhall Lake near Mendenhall Glacier for a report of a found kayak with a dry bag attached to it. The complainant reported towing the kayak to shore after finding it unoccupied and no one around it in the lake in distress. AST took possession of the items for safekeeping as there was no identifying markings on the kayak. In the evening of July 16, AST was notified by the Juneau Police Department that Paul Rodriguez Jr., age 43 of Juneau, was reported missing and that his vehicle was in the parking lot of the Mendenhall Visitors Center. In the morning of July 17, the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEADOGS were utilized to search Mendenhall Lake and shoreline areas, and a chartered helicopter was used for an aerial search. During the search, a good Samaritan turned over a helmet with a Go-Pro camera attached, it was confirmed to have belonged to Paul Rodriguez. A review of the video determined Rodriguez had drown on July 11 when his kayak overturned, and he went into the glacial water. It is believed he was not wearing a PFD or appropriate protective clothing for glacial water sports. Next of Kin has been notified. Teams will continue to search the lake to recover the body.

    On 7/17/23 at 1600 hours Alaska State Trooper contacted Christopher Todd Allen, age 58 of Sterling, at a residence off Stassi St. in Sterling. Investigation revealed Allen had an outstanding arrest warrant for Failure to Appear for arraignment with an original charge of No Insurance. Allen was arrested and remanded at Wildwood pretrial with a $500 bail.

    Location: Mile 77 Sterling Highway, Sterling AK
    Type: Warrant Arrest, False Information.

    Dispatch Text:

      On 7-18-2023 at 0216 hours, the Soldotna AST K-9 Team conducted a traffic stop on a black 1995 Ford Ranger for expired vehicle registration as of 2019. The driver claimed to have no identification on her person and the investigation revealed she was providing someone else's name. The female driver was positively identified as Jacqueline Mary Brewer (42 YOA) of Anchorage. An APSIN check revealed Brewer has a $10,000 outstanding Warrant for her arrest for the original charge of theft 2nd degree. Brewer’s operator’s license is revoked for the original charge of driving on a revoked license. Brewer was issued a citation for DWLR with a mandatory court appearance. Brewer was arrested for the warrant and for providing false information after providing a different person’s name. Brewer was transported and remanded to Wildwood Pretrial.

    On 7/18/2023, State Troopers assisted by Craig Police Department and working in concert with Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD), served a search warrant located near Craig. The search and subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of Torrin Latimer, age 26 of Craig for 5 counts of Misconduct Involving Weapons 3rd degree and Violating Conditions of Release. Latimer is currently on conditions of release for Misconduct Involving Controlled Substances. Latimer was remanded to the Craig Jail pending arraignment.

    On 7/18/23 AST responded to a death on Rolling Hills Street. John W. Marshall, age 75 of Wasilla, was pronounced deceased by medical personnel on scene. The death has been ruled as natural causes and the next of kin has been notified.

    On 7/17/23 AST responded to an after-the-fact burglary. Following an investigation Linnus Depriest, age 65 of Palmer, was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial for Burglary in the first degree, Theft in the second degree, Theft in the fourth degree, and Criminal trespass in the second degree.

    On July 13, 2023, at 2:45 pm, the Alaska State Troopers were requested to conduct a welfare check on 55-year-old Anchorage resident Cary Gibbs. Troopers were provided information from the complainant, including GPS coordinates. Troopers responded to the area and located Gibbs deceased on an ATV trail in Wasilla. A preliminary investigation revealed that Gibbs’ death was likely due to a medical emergency. His body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsy, and next of kin have been notified. The investigation is ongoing.

    On July 18, 2023 Troopers contacted Sarah Reagin during a traffic stop in Fairbanks. Investigation revealed Sarah was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence with a BrAC of 0.194. Sarah was arrested for one count of DUI and remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center. This case is closed.

    On 7/18/2023 at 0046 hours, Troopers conducted a traffic stop on Gillam Way for a Improper use of Registration Plate. Driver was identified as Dustin Peters. Dustin showed multiple signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for DUI and was remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center without incident on one count of DUI and one count of Improper use of Registration Plate.

    On July 13, 2023, at approximately 0733 hours, Fairbanks AST received a report that someone had shot a structure near Pikes Landing Rd in Fairbanks. Initial investigation revealed several bullet holes in windows and walls on the exterior side of the structure which is near the Chena River. Additionally, several gun casings were found near the boat landing near Chena Small Tracks Rd. A vehicle was observed speeding away from the boat landing.

    On July 18, 2023, at approximately 0142 hours, Fairbanks AST received multiple reports of gun shots coming from near the area of the Princess Lodge and Chena Small Tracks. One of the callers stated someone was shooting from a vehicle. Troopers responded to the boat landing at the end of Chena Small Tracks and interviewed a few juveniles who stated a male and female were shooting from a black Nissan SUV. There was a male driver and female passenger. The vehicle was last seen driving down Dolly Varden Ave away from Chena Small Tracks. Troopers additionally found multiple bullet defects in the siding and windows of Princess Lodge on the ground level of the building. The direction of the holes was pointing towards the boat launch at the end of Chena Small Tracks.

    On 7-17-23 at approximately 1630 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of a disturbance off Otto Lake Road in Healy.  During the investigation, it was discovered that Hunter Melton, age 22 of Oregon had an extraditable warrant.  Melton was arrested on the outstanding warrant and remanded to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.  The disturbance incident is being forwarded to the district attorney's office for review.

    On 7-18-23 at approximately 0430 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of an assault at a campground in Healy.  Investigation revealed that Shawn Sawyer, age 45 of Oregon assaulted a family member by strangulation.  Sawyer was found operating a motor vehicle while impaired and a check in APSIN showed he did not have a valid operator license.  Sawyer was arrested and remanded to the Fairbanks Correctional Center on three counts of assault II, one count of driving under the influence, and one count of driving while license revoked.

    On July 18, 2023 at about 2:13 PM, Alaska State Troopers in Tok received a report of a single motorcycle that struck a moose on the Tok Cutoff about 30 miles from Tok. Troopers responded to the scene. Subsequent investigation determined that Thomas Lake, age 50 of Anchorage, was the sole rider of the motorcycle and had died on scene. Next of kin has been notified.

    On 7/17/23, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post inspected and seized unmarked crab gear in Tenakee Inlet.  Investigation revealed the gear belonged to Glen McCormick, age 56, of Anchorage.  McCormick was cited for failing to mark personal use shellfish gear.  Bail is set at $!20 in the district court at Sitka.

    On 7/16/23, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, contacted Christian Buschmann, age 35, of Petersburg during the commercial salmon seine fishery at Hidden Falls.  Investigation revealed Buschmann was operating a commercial seine skiff which continued to be unlicensed by CFEC.  A citation was issued, with bail set at $220, in the district court at Sitka.

    On July 17, 2023, at 12:59 pm, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, received a report of CPR in progress on a 16-year-old male approximately 3.7 miles up the Harding Ice Field Trail. People on site along with staff from the National Park Service performed CPR. Paramedics with Life Med arrived on location and assisted. All lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and the juvenile was pronounced deceased at 3:12 pm, due to cardiac arrest. The body was transported to Soldotna and released to the State Medical Examiner’s Office. Next of kin were notified of his passing.

Arraignment is scheduled in the Dillingham District Court on August 1, 2023.
