On December 8, 2023, at 1:12pm, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a crashed airplane near mile 155 of the Sterling Highway. Troopers and Emergency services responded to the area and were able to locate a crashed Piper Super Cub airplane in the trees at mile 154.5 of the Sterling Highway. The pilot of the plane was found deceased upon arrival and has been identified as Kurt Stjean, age 52 of Homer. An adult female passenger was extricated from the plane and transported to a local area hospital. Next of kin notification has been made. The investigation is on-going. The NTSB was notified and responded to the scene.

Location: WasillaType: Warrant Arrest X2Dispatch Text:
On 12/09/2023 at approximately 0159 hours, Alaska State Troopers stopped a vehicle for equipment violations on Meadow Lakes Loop near Northshore Drive, Wasilla. Investigation revealed the driver, Garth Vaughan age 30 of Wasilla had a warrant for failure to appear O/C DWLR in the amount of $250. Additionally, the passenger Corey Toews age 50 of Wasilla also had a warrant for failure to appear O/C DWLR in the amount of $500. Vaughan and Toews were arrested and remanded to Matsu Pretrial without incident.

On 12/08/2023 AST responded to a disturbance on Old Squaw Loop. Following an investigation James Vertin, age 50 of Wasilla, was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial for domestic violence-related Assault in the fourth degree and criminal mischief in the third degree.

On 12/08/2023, at approximately 1916 hours, AST responded to a disturbance in Wasilla between Cutis Hughes, 34 of Wasilla, and an ex significant other. Throughout AST investigation it was learned Curtis had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Following the investigation, it was determined Curtis recklessly caused physical injury to his ex-significant other with a dangerous instrument. Curtis was remanded at Matsu Pretrial for his warrant and Assault 3 D.V., where he was held with no bail.

During a separate AST investigation on 12/09/2023, it was learned Logan Spencer, age 30 of Wasilla, had an outstanding warrant for Vehicle Theft 2nd Degree. Logan was arrested and remanded to Matsu Pretrial for his warrant.

On 12/09/2023 AST responded to a disturbance on Heath Drive. Following an investigation Katherine Vanvelzor, age 26 of Houston, was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial for domestic violence-related Assault in the fourth degree and Unlawful contact in the second degree as well as an active arrest warrant (3PA-22-01120CR, Fail to Remand, O/C DUI).

On 12/09/2023 at approximately 0214 hours, Troopers were dispatched to the Best Western Hotel located at 1255 Tvsa Way. Troopers' investigation revealed that Carmen McCarty committed the crime of Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree. Carmen was placed under arrest and transported to FCC.

On 12/08/2023 at approximately 1411 hours, Troopers responded to Sheep Creek and Sheep Creek Ext, for a report of an motor vehicle collision. Upon further investigation it was determined a vehicle had attempted a left turn striking an on coming vehicle. No injuries reported. A crash report was completed.

On 12/09/2023 at approximately 1230 hours, Troopers responded to Mitchell highway and Airport Road for a report of a motor vehicle collision. Upon further investigation it was determined a vehicle entering the highway lost control trying to merge into traffic and struck the guard rail. No injuries reported. A crash report was completed.

On December 8, 2023, at approximately 2248 hours, Alaska State Troopers received the report of a domestic disturbance in Fort Yukon. 52-year-old Robert Springer was arrested and remanded to Fairbanks Correctional Center for Criminal Mischief in the Fifth Degree.

On 12-9-23 at approximately 2056 hours, Delta Junction AST received a report of a disturbance. AST responded and the investigation showed Herbert Avellaneda-Celis, age 38, of Delta Junction shot his significant other's vehicle tire out when she attempted to leave with their seven month old son. AST was unable to make contact with Herbert and a warrant is being requested for his arrest.
