On 09/21/2024 at approximately 0228 hours, Alaska State Troopers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle speeding and swerving across a lane on northbound Parks Highway at Johnsons Road in Wasilla. AST contacted driver Kristen Lee Mitchell, age 27 of Big Lake. Investigation revealed Mitchell drove under the influence of intoxicating beverages. Additionally, Mitchell refused to provide a breath sample during the course of a DUI investigation. Mitchell was arrested and transported to Mat-Su Pre-Trial where he was remanded on charges of DUI and Refusal to submit to chemical test and released O.R. when sober.

On September 21, 2024, at approximately 0211 hours, the Alaska State Troopers responded to Mile 76 of the Parks Highway for a report of an intoxicated driver. Investigation revealed that Mathieu Frohlich, age 40 of Wasilla, was operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Mathieu was arrested and remanded at MSPT.

On 09/20/2024 at 2211 hours, the Alaska State Troopers responded to a death investigation. Troopers' investigation determined that the death was natural. The medical examiner was contacted, and the decedent was released to the funeral home.

On 09/17/2024 AST took a report of a lost firearm in the area of the Rex Trail access trail near Mile 286 Parks Highway, near Anderson, AK. The firearm was lost during a moose hunting trip when it fell off an ATV. Anyone who located a firearm is requested to turn it into the Alaska State Troopers or contact the Troopers at 907-451-5100.

On September 21st, 2024, at approximately 0722 hours, Fairbanks Alaska State Troopers received a report of a Disturbance at the area of Homer Dr. The complainant reported that her ex-husband and her son were fighting and her cars’ back window was broken. Dalton Benefield, 24 years old, was identified as the suspect and admitted to breaking his mom's car window. Dalton was arrested and remanned to Fairbanks Correctional Center for one count DV Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree.

On 09/21/2024, the Alaska State Troopers responded to a suspicious circumstance in Fairbanks. The Troopers' investigation determined that a female had accidentally self-inflicted a gunshot injury. The female was transported to FMH, where she was pronounced deceased.

On 09/20/2024 at approximately 1905 hours, Alaska State Troopers attended a public event held at the Tok School during the evening hours. AST observed numerous community members present to include youth and adults. About halfway through the event, Patrick M. Cleary, age 67, arrived and was suspected to have been under the influence and wondered further into the school away from where the event was being held. The school Principal was present and requested a trespass be issued by AST. Cleary was informed of the 1-year trespass order and taken home. At approximately 2153 hours, upon conclusion of the event AST observed Cleary back on the premises of Tok school. Cleary was detained and charged with Criminal Trespass II and served a court date of appearance.

On 09/21/2024 at approximately 1341 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a fire in the Tok area. Investigation revealed, a white 1986 Dodge van bearing AK plate LAC127, caught fire in the driveway of a residence off W. 1st Ave. in Tok. Tok Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire and prevented any further spread. No structures or surrounding curtilage was threatened. Jason A. Corgill, age 48, was contacted and reported a faulty carburetor with a suspected fuel leak. Corgill was taken into custody without incident on two outstanding arrest warrants, 4TO-23-00003CR and 4TO-24-00078CR. Corgill was transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center and held on bail.

On 09/21/2024 at approximately 1420 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of an unconscious individual in the Northway area. Investigation revealed, Susie A. Sam Gagnon, age 70, passed away. The State Medical Examiner’s Office (SME) out of Anchorage, was contacted and the death was reported. SME requested further examination of Gagnon’s remains due to serious burn injury present. Legacy Funeral Homes out of Fairbanks responded to assist with transportation of Gagnon’s remains. Next of kin was present on scene and were briefed on further examination by the SME.

On September 21, 2024, at approximately 0546 hours, I conducted a traffic stop on an individual riding a bicycle on the sidewalk on College Road near Aurora DriveThe individual falsely identified themselves and then admitted to being Christa John. Christa John had an active $50000 felony escape warrant. AST arrested Christa for her warrant and charged her with one count of False information or report. Christa was medically cleared and remanded to FCC.

On September 21, 2024, at approximately 1230 hours, encountered a vehicle bearing plate EYB300. Inside the vehicle, troopers observed Ashley Hunt and narcotic equipment in plain view. Ashley granted consent to search the vehicle for drugs. Troopers located suspected methamphetamine, a butterfly knife, and a passport that did not belong to Ashley. AST will be pursuing charges for Misconduct involving a controlled substance, theft, and misconduct involving weapons.

On 9/18/24 Tok and Fairbanks Wildlife Troopers contacted two hunters in GMU12. Investigation revealed William Trickel, age 52 of Oshkosh, WI, and Derek Habel, age 62 of Anchor Point, harvested a moose in a portion of GMU 12 that closed for moose hunting on 9/17/24. Trickel and Habel were cited for Take Moose Closed Season and Unlawful Possession/Transportation of Big Game. The meat and antlers from the moose were seized. Arraignment is scheduled for 10/24/24 at 1500 hours in Tok District Court.

On 9/21/24, Michael Kruse, age 40 of Palmer was cited for taking a sub-legal bull moose in GMU 13. He was also cited for cutting the antlers from the skull plate, a violation in GMUs with antler restricted hunts. Arraignment is set for 10/8/24 in Glennallen Court.
--Update-- On 10/8/24, Michaek Kruse pled guilty in Glennallen District Court to the aforementioned charges. The investigation by the Troopers revealed not only that Kruse had taken a sub-legal bull, but he had made an attempt to conceal the size of the antlers beyond simply cutting them from the skull. He was ordered to pay $4000 in fines and restitution, forfeit the antlers and meat, and equipment seized by the Troopers, and his hunting privileges were suspended.Posted on 9/21/2024 7:41:37 PM by DPS\jmmcginnis
